BRF information

Are you concerned that you might be using harmful behaviours towards your parent(s)/carer(s)? You may be experiencing something called ‘CAPVA’. This stands for Child and Adolescent to Parent Violence and Abuse.

The following may be present:

  • Physical violence
  • Threats
  • Controlling behaviours
  • Destruction of property

We understand that this situation can lead to a strain in family relationships and feelings of hurt and shame on either side of this dynamic. You may want to change the nature of this relationship and be able to enjoy a calmer and happier home environment. If you feel ready and able to contribute to this change, alongside your parent(s)/carer(s), we’re here to help.

What can I expect from SAFE! Support?

Our service for children, young people and families affected by CAPVA relies upon the person using harmful behaviours to consent to the support and be willing to engage with us. Initially, you might feel nervous about accepting help or hesitant to talk about what’s been going on, and that’s ok. Support can bring up lots of feelings, but we’ll do our best to meet you and your family where you are. This means that we’ll actively listen to your feelings, needs, and hopes for the future.
What support can I have?

  • You can take part in 1-2-1 sessions of support. The purpose of these is to:
    • Give you a safe, non-judgemental space to talk about your feelings
    • Allow us to discuss ways we can help you to express your feelings in a healthy way
    • Talk about how we can structure your support journey with us
    • Consider what you would like from support, as well as any changes you want to see
  • Your parent(s)/caregiver(s) and sibling(s) can also access 1-2-1 sessions of support, so that everyone in the family is involved in contributing to a calmer, happier home environment
  • If we feel that you might benefit from extra help, we can provide information, advice, and advocacy. This might include signposting you and your family to other services.

Young Person Testimony about BRF support:
“I react differently now. And my Mum tries to talk more about things. We are kinder to each other.”
